Authorities reported Sunday that an SUV plowed into a Christmas parade in the Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha, injuring at least 20 people.
Several people were killed, including children, after a red SUV drove through parade barricades and struck at least 20 people, including children, according to Waukesha Police Chief Daniel Thompson, who confirmed the incident during a news conference on Sunday.
Police took some of the injured to hospitals, while others were brought by family members, according to Thompson, who described the situation as "extremely terrible" and "quite chaotic."
As the red SUV barreled down the street, crashing into parade participants, the tragedy occurred during one of the city's greatest and most treasured annual events.
A red SUV breaks through barriers and speeds into the lane where the procession was taking place, according to videos shared to social media, including a live broadcast of the event hosted by the City of Waukesha.
Thompson said the suspect was shot by an officer and that a person of interest is already in custody, but that the investigation is "extremely active."
