Officials confirmed Thursday that Jashyah Moore, who went missing from her home in New Jersey about a month ago, had been found safe in New York City.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, a 14-year-old girl from New Jersey who was missing for almost a month has been found safe in New York City. Acting Essex County Prosecutor Ted Stephens said Friday it appears the girl, Jashyah Moore, was a runaway.
Even though Jashyah had cut her hair off, a Good Samaritan on 111th Street in Harlem had obviously observed her. Officers from the NYPD were able to speak with her and determine her identify.
Jashyah, according to the prosecutor, did not want to return home. He went on to say that she had slept at several areas in New Jersey before settling in a Brooklyn shelter.
It's still unknown how she got from East Orange to Brooklyn and then returned to Harlem. Authorities claim she was a resourceful woman.
Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens said, "The young lady appears to have run away," adding that she "did not want to make herself known."
Jamie A. Moore, 39, the teen's mother, has been charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child in the second degree. According to Stephens and East Orange Police Chief Phyllis Bindi, the endangerment charges include allegations of physical abuse and neglect.
Moore was apprehended on Friday, according to officials. She is being imprisoned at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark until her next court date.
The New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCCP) has taken Moore's 14-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son from her custody, according to authorities.
The Essex County Sheriff expressed gratitude to the public and the media for their assistance in locating Jashyah.
