After an Unexpectedly Close Battle with Republican Jack Ciattarelli, New Jersey Governor Murphy Emerges Victorious
After a campaign based on the incumbent's progressive policies and handling of the epidemic, Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy and Republican Jack Ciattarelli were almost even early Wednesday.
The Associated Press has yet to declare a winner in the contest, as votes from Tuesday's election are still being counted on a night that spelled doom for Democrats. Ciattarelli and the first-term governor were separated by just 1,200 votes out of more than 2.3 million cast, according to incomplete data.
First, they must finish counting all of the ballots in counties such as Essex and Passaic, where not all districts have been counted completely. Then there's the mail-in ballots and provisional ballots, and depending on how close the race is, whoever doesn't win may request a recount, which could take even longer.
Gov. Murphy's Wednesday coronavirus briefing was slated to take place today, but it has been canceled.
It's uncertain whether Ciattarelli will speak today, or if he'll even address his followers.
