NJ Teen Killed By Truck On His Way To School
The Pilot who Escaped his Plane Before it Exploded into Flames in Sunday's Plane Disaster in Old Bridge was Only 17 Years Old.
According to Old Bridge Police Chief Joe Mandola, the pilot who unexpectedly survived Sunday afternoon's jet crash at Old Bridge, narrowly leaving his plane before it exploded into flames, was only 17 years old.
The young man was attempting to land at Old Bridge Airstrip, a private airport, when he crashed just before 4:45 p.m. Sunday.
It's unclear if this was the 17-year-first old's solo flight, but he was a student pilot operating the plane alone. He got the Cessna Skyhawk II to land, but it went off the runway.
The pilot was able to exit the cockpit before the plane exploded into flames when the plane came to a halt.
According to interim Old Bridge Police Chief Joe Mandola, he was able to flee with only minor wounds and bruises. According to Chief Mandola, other media reported a death and that the pilot perished, but this is untrue.
To be checked out, he was transferred to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital. There were no other passengers on board.
The young man is not from the Old Bridge neighborhood.
