700 NJ Transit Employees Test Positive For COVID

With nearly 700 of NJ Transit's 12,000 employees testing positive for COVID-19, the state's recent rise in COVID-19 cases is beginning to have an impact on its services.

Despite the uptick in instances, NJ Transit spokesman Jim Smith said the system is still running at 97 percent of normal weekday rail service.

"While we appreciate the impact that a single train cancellation has on our customers who rely on that train, the cancellations are a small percentage of the approximately 700 everyday trains that are scheduled. Similarly, around 94 percent of the weekday scheduled bus service is still being provided by bus "Smith stated.

NJ Transit, according to Smith, is doing its best to balance the increase in positive cases and quarantines among its personnel while minimizing the impact on consumers by maintaining regular weekday and weekend schedules.

If there are any service disruptions, NJ Transit will notify customers via e-mail and text alerts, push notifications on the mobile app, the website, and line-specific Twitter feeds.

Wednesday, New Jersey reported 31,391 positive cases and 58 deaths. According to the state department of health's dashboard, there are over 29,000 more instances than a month ago.
