A Plane Crashes Onto a Home in Somerset County

MANVILLE, NJ

On Monday afternoon, a plane crashed onto the front lawn of a Somerset County home while attempting to land at a nearby Hillsborough airfield.

According to Manville Lt. John Crater, a pilot flying from North Carolina experienced "some sort of issue" landing at Central Jersey Airport near Millstone River Road.

According to FlightAware.com, the 2006 single-engine Mooney M20M plane took off from Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina at 10:42 a.m. on its way to Hillsborough.

"He abandoned the landing and attempted to take off again, but clipped a tree, spinning him around into Manville, where he crashed onto a home's front lawn," Crater added.

At 12:50 p.m. on April 4, Manville Police received a call regarding a crash in the 900 block of South Main Street and arrived about 90 seconds later, according to Crater.

When the cops came, the pilot had already made his way across the street on his own. According to Crater, police saw the plane was burning with a minor fire that quickly went out.

The pilot had a non-life threatening head injury, according to Crater, because he was alert and responsive to questioning.

During the crash, the plane, a 2006 Mooney M20M, collided with a power line, causing a power outage in the area. There was some property damage, however none of the houses or cars in the area were structurally damaged by the plane.

At the time of the crash, there was someone inside the house where the plane crashed.

While the plane is being removed, South Main Street in Manville and Millstone River Road in Hillsborough remain closed. PSE&G will then come out and fix the electricity wires. The roads aren't expected to be fully open until around 6 p.m., according to Crater.

Drivers are advised to stay away from the area.
