Shooting at American Dream Mall

Police Investigating Shooting at American Dream Mall in East Rutherford

Gunshots broke out at American Dream on Thursday evening, causing commotion and a lockdown at the large mall and entertainment center, with some parents reporting being separated from their children amid the confusion.

Police are investigating a shooting that occurred at the American Dream mall on Thursday evening, sending shoppers fleeing for cover.

Around 8:20 p.m., the New Jersey State Police tweeted that the incident had been resolved "It was established that he was not an active shooter. The mall has been secured, and troopers are removing patrons in a safe manner. The door to the American Dream will remain shut."

Police haven't released anything about the event, which happened around 5:50 p.m., or whether anyone was hurt.

Isabella O'Malley, 23, was with her mother and younger brother on the third level of the mall when she heard two bullets, according to her.

"At first, we didn't think it was gunshots, but then we saw people fleeing and we knew something wasn't right," says one witness. O’Malley

They tried to rush into a store, but the doors were already closing, so they hurried down the escalators to the bottom floor, she added. When they arrived at the parking garage, police had already arrived and were directing shoppers to get into their cars and leave.

Shoppers who had been evacuated from the mall waited in the parking garage to meet with their families, who were trapped in the theme parks on the other side of the complex. "Please go to Lot 26 if you want to reconcile with any family members," the state police advised.

Gov. Murphy tweeted Thursday night thanking the police for their response. "Thank you to our brave @NJSP Troopers and law enforcement professionals on the scene at the American Dream Mall. We are incredibly grateful for your swift response."
