COVID-19 has canceled almost 4,000 flights to, from, and within the United States, including at Newark Airport.
Over the holiday weekend, harsh winter weather, labor shortages, and an increase in COVID-19 cases caused by the omicron variant hampered travel at the nation's airports, notably in Newark.
Hundreds of flights were canceled over the weekend due to manpower shortages caused by the omicron surge, according to airlines. According to statistics from
FlightAware, an online flight tracking service, more than 8,000 flights to, from, and within the United States have been canceled since Christmas Eve.

Coronavirus personnel issues have been reported by Delta, United, JetBlue, and American Airlines. The Associated Press said that European and Australian airlines also postponed holiday-season flights due to infected workers, but weather and other reasons also played a role.
In the United States, weather also played a role. According to the Associated Press, snow in the Pacific Northwest caused about 250 flight cancellations in and out of Seattle on Sunday. Alaska Airlines expects roughly 100 weather-related flight cancellations on Monday. The cancellations were not caused by COVID-19.
Because personnel and crew members called in ill with COVID-19, United Airlines canceled 115 of almost 4,000 flights on Monday, the carrier said.
More staffing problems are possible.
"We have seen an increasing number of sick calls from omicron," the airline said, adding it had entered the holiday season with the highest staffing levels since the pandemic began," Jet Blue said in a statement.
"Despite our best efforts, we've had to cancel a number of flights, and additional flight cancellations and other delays remain a possibility."
